The Heart Link Womens NetworkThe Road Less Traveled

- by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

Two Roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim
Because is was grassy and wanted wear
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet, knowing how way leads onto way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence
Two roads diverged in a wood
And I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference.

There is much to be said about the road not taken, but even more to be said about the road chosen. I love Robert Frost’s poem because of the end line, “and that has made all the difference.” Every journey in life begins with a first step and then the choice of the path which we will follow. There is much to be said about cutting your own way through the forest of your life. It takes courage, confidence, persistence and a “never quit” attitude to follow this path, but there is also a great deal to be said for beginning your journey to success by “emulating greatness.” What does emulating greatness mean? It means, finding someone you respect, admire and who has accomplished everything you want to accomplish and simply follow in their footsteps.  For me, I always begin with emulating greatness. I want to learn what others have done before me, to accomplish the dream I am dreaming of. But once I understand what they have done and disciplined myself to do it as well, then I give myself full permission to put my personal stamp on my efforts and actions.

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference.” No matter which road you choose, the most important part of success is that you choose and begin your journey TODAY!
